About Me

Emeritus Professor Margaret O’Connor has a long and diverse career of more than 30 years in clinical palliative care. Her roles have encompassed the establishment and management of mainly community-based palliative care services, clinical nursing, research and education.

In 2015, Margaret was appointed as Foundation Professor of Nursing at Swinburne University of Technology, to establish a new Bachelor of Nursing. Prior to this, she was the inaugural Vivian Bullwinkel Chair in Palliative Care Nursing at Monash University from 2003-14 and remains at Monash as Emeritus Professor.

Margaret has served on many state, national and international committees, including President of Palliative Care Australia from 2006-2010. She also sits on a number of boards and committees in the community. From its establishment in Jan 2017, Margaret has served as Deputy Chairperson of the State Government’s Ministerial Advisory Committee on Voluntary Assisted Death.

In 2005, Margaret accepted the national honour of Member of the Order of Australia, and in 2012 was made a Life Member of Palliative Care Victoria, both honours for service to the development and establishment of palliative care services in Victoria.
