I love ideas and thrive on developing new ideas and solutions for business and social problems, as well as implementing them so they take root in organisations and thus enable transformation.
I was a business journalist for 20 years around the globe and during that time have met with and interviewed thousands of business and cultural leaders. This has given me a huge insight into leadership and why some initiatives fly and others fail.
After 20 years I wanted to go beyond writing about business and set up my own business. I established ProfessionalMums.net—an innovative online platform to be part of the answer to the issue of gender balance. We find highly-skilled mums that have left work or are looking for a different way of working and connect them with employers that have flexible work opportunities. It won’t solve gender diversity on its own, but it’s a step in the right direction.
I also believe that we have a responsibility to share our knowledge and experience with others, to not only create better businesses but also stronger networks and communities. In this vein I work as the CEO of the Financial Executives Institute. We work with 80 of the most senior CFOs in Australia to set them up in one-year mentoring relationships with younger finance executives. Our mission is the transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next.
All of these ideas I love to share in print, online or in person. I work as a speaker through the Saxton Speaker Bureau and you can find my profile here http://www.saxton.com.au/kate-mills/. I am also regular commentator on The Drum and on ABC 24.
