Wendy Catling (she/her) is an Australian visual artist working primarily in the medium of photography. Her work focuses on shame, memory, power, and intergenerational trauma. She employs alternative, vernacular and studio photography, video and installation practices. Motivated by the experiences of her own family and wider family histories, the artist takes a reparative approach to the complexities of domestic violence.
Wendy completed her MA – Photography project, Nightshade, in 2020 supervised by Dr Kristian Haggblom and mentored by Janina Green (Aus) and Melinda Gibson (UK). Catling has taught art and photography to secondary and adult students for more than 20 years. She volunteers with victims of domestic violence and as a gallery tour guide. Wendy published a photobook titled Nightshade in 2022. She was a finalist for both Ballarat International Foto Biennale Graduate Award and the ZartArt National Teacher-Artist award in 2021. Her works have been shown in the USA and Australia and are in collections at Warrnambool Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia and in private collections.
